Hop pellets come in two types, Type 90 and Type 45. The classifications describe the approximate percentage of extract from the processed raw hops.

Type 90 yields approx. 90 kg of pellets per100 kg of raw hops; Type 45 yields approx. 45 kg. The difference between the two product forms lies in the processing. While the production of the Type 90 is confined to the cleaning, drying and milling of the raw hops, the processing of Type 45 includes the mechanical enrichment of the hop powder to a certain balanced bitters value.

Pellets differ from raw hops in the following ways:

• reduced transport and storage costs
• suitable for automatic packaging due to flow quality
• homogeneity in all charge sizes
• better to use in the brewhouse
