"Hop soil" should be deep, up to approx. 2 m rooting depth and be uniformly water conductive. Hops are also cultivated on heavy loam and light sandy soils. The heaviest loams and pure sand are however not suitable due to their poor water conductivity. Since nowadays the labour organisation and full use of mechanical aids are more to the fore than intrinsic soil quality, loamy sand (lS) and sandy loam (sL) can also be made suitable with the addition of organic substances.
