Climate and Soil

The combined effect of geological (soil quality) and climatic conditions promotes optimum growth and umbel development for Tettnanger hops and accordingly their geographically characteristic homogeneity.

Tettnanger hops are planted exclusively on the so called lower terrace gravel, the late moraine of the Würm Ice Age. The Bodensee, as the only major foothills lake in Geramny, is classed as temperature corrective. It serves in winter as a heat store and has a cooling effect on the microclimate in summer.

The following describes the most important geological and climatic conditions and their effect on hop growth.
